Coalition for a Sustainable Food Transition

Where local candidates stand

Last Update:  Sep 19, 2021 @ 6:51 pm

Where do local candidates stand on transitioning our food system to more plant-based foods?

In the leadup to the 2021 federal election, we asked the local candidates from all major political parties in key ridings:

“If elected, can we count on you to adopt and implement policies to transition the food system to healthier and more sustainable foods, including an increase in the share of plant-based foods in diets?”

The Coalition is in the process of reaching out to more local candidates in a selection of ridings. Their responses will continue to be posted in the days leading up to the election, as we receive them. Please check back here frequently.

Thank you for reaching out to me on such an important subject.
I agree that our meat consumption is far too excessive and causes more harm than good.
Having said that, we must ensure any food that is healthy is affordable for all.
The pressure needs to be on the big fast food chains as they are the largest advocates for beef and chicken because that’s what they know. I would support this initiative and ensure the fast food companies work harder to promote healthier alternatives.

I myself have been vegan for 5 years, and a vegetarian for 20 years prior to that. I became involved in politics through advocating for animal welfare and environmental issues. This is the main driver behind my campaign and why I choose to run for the Green Party. Transitioning to a plant based diet is far better for our health, the health of the environment and the wellbeing of the animals. I am deeply aware of this. You can absolutely count on my support!

The goal of the Green Party of Canada is to support humane and sustainable food systems while promoting more plant-based eating and reducing the consumption of animal sourced products to levels that the ecosystem can sustain. We want to establish climate change emission targets, for all components of the food system including nitrogen fertilizer use and food procurement in federal institutions. We also want to invest in science infrastructure and business development that support a shift to farming systems based on ecological principles.

Definitely! I fully support the new evidence-based Canada Food Guide. The Green Party 2021 platform mentions support for a plant-based diet and the new evidence-based Canada Food Guide. As a medical doctor who advocates for a Whole Foods, Plant-Based way of eating I will be enthusiastically pursuing this issue in the House of Commons. By way of background: my practice is dedicated exclusively to Lifestyle Medicine.

In Niagara the growth of plant based options has been a benefit. Lets do our part to take this from restaurants and grocers and get it into the hands of kids. Plant based policies will aid in decarbonization targets and provide healthy domestic revenues for Canadian farmers.

Thank you for writing. I share your concern, and you can count on my support. The Green Party has developed an approach about this important issue, which is mentioned on page 21 of our platform. We plan to restructure the $3 billion Next Policy Framework (NPF- 2023-2028) to shift program dollars to support agriculture that is based on ecological principles, permaculture, and other aspects favouring more plant-based foods. At my candidate webpage you will find my paper on Ecological Federalism.

The Green Party supports more sustainable farming practices with a lower footprint. I eat a plant based diet personally and agree wholeheartedly with your position.

Thank you for writing about this very important issue. If I am elected, you can count on me to do what I can to move towards healthier and more sustainable foods, including a shift towards more plant-based foods. I have already been moving in that direction because of my 3 children who over the years became vegetarian and now are vegan. I am not vegan, but I do see the cruelty and unethical practices that we have been exposing animals to, and I would like to do what I can to make things better for all creatures on our planet.
